The Ukraine Conflict

Atualizado: 28 de fev. de 2022

In my opinion like most other peoples’ view, Vladimir Putin and Russia are very wrong to have invaded the Ukraine. From a humane standpoint, it isn’t civilized and compassionate to start what could become World-War-III.

Certainly, the western world has reacted strongly by showing solidarity and voicing its attitude towards Putin’s aggression. World leaders have imposed sanctions against him and Sergey Lavrov by blocking their overseas bank accounts. Europe has targeted about 350 Russian parliament members by limiting their finance, technology, and defense. New sanctions are underway!

Putin has also been suspended as the honorary president and ambassador of the international judo federation while many sports personalities and whole teams have boycotted international competitions. President Bolsonaro spoke about the war in Ukraine Sunday 27th February and stressed that the Brazilian position is one of neutrality. Does Bolsonaro’s opposing opinion differ to the majority of the world for good reason? Is his stance one of just solidarity with Putin to take a neutral position, or is he thinking of Brazil’s future relationship?

Ukraine went through two revolutions in 2005 and 2014, both times rejecting Russia’s supremacy and seeking a path to join the European Union and NATO. Nevertheless, Putin has been particularly enraged by the prospect of NATO bases next to his borders and says Ukraine joining the US-led transatlantic alliance would mark the crossing of a red line. Some say with good reason that if Russia decided to put a missile base in Cuba, the Americans wouldn’t allow it under any circumstances.

Whichever way you look at it, in this day and age of globalization the utopia would be working together in sync, but the reality is really very different. Putin held talks, as Kim Jong-un from North Korea has with China recently, and it seems they are on the same page. There is a kind of alliance between these three nations which if not handled judiciously could escalate into something horrendous.

Take care!
