A trip from São Paulo to Atibaia is a relatively short and straightforward ride, making it a good option for a day trip or a weekend getaway. The route is primarily on paved roads, suitable for most cars and motorcycles even though they are not perfect. It's also worth considering a visit to the Pedra Grande for a scenic view and some off-road exploration.

Route Options:

  • Via BR-381:

This is likely the most direct and common route. It's a well-maintained highway. Or so online sources will tell you, making for a smooth and efficient ride. However, for motorcycles it’s a little bumpy and there are potholes, so caution is necessary.

  • Consider secondary roads:

If you're looking for a more scenic or less trafficked route, you could explore some of the smaller roads that connect to the main highways. Two routes to follow is up into the mountains of Serra Cantareira on lanes to Mairiporã which lead back to Fernão Dias (BR-381). You could use a GPS or a map app to find these options.

Things to Consider:

  • Traffic:

Be aware that traffic can be heavy on Fernão Dias, especially during peak hours and weekends.

  • Weather:

Check the weather forecast before you go and be prepared for potential rain or strong winds.

  • Fuel:

Ensure your car or motorcycle has enough fuel to reach Atibaia and back, or to reach a reliable gas station along the way.

  • Clothing:

By motorcycle wear appropriate riding gear, including a helmet, jacket, gloves, and sturdy boots, for safety and comfort.

  • Breaks:

Plan for breaks during your ride to stretch your legs and stay hydrated. When I ride to Mairiporã via Serra Cantareira a round trip is just over 60 kilometers and often I don’t stop. It’s a two hours motorcycle ride. To Atibaia it is around the same distance, perhaps five km more.

Activities in Atibaia:

  • Pedra Grande: A must-visit for the panoramic views. There's a paved road leading most of the way up, but some off-road trails are available for those with the right equipment.

  • Lake of Atibaia: Relax by the lake, enjoy water activities, or have a picnic.

  • Historic Center: Explore the city's historic center, with its charming architecture and local shops.

  • Restaurants and Cafés: Indulge in the local cuisine and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of Atibaia.

Tips for the Trip:

  • Pre-trip Inspection: Ensure your car or motorcycle is in good working order before you leave.

  • Navigation: Use a GPS or map app to help you navigate the route. Either that or use good old instinct. Explore by following signs and trying out your gut navigation skills. It’s an adventure, for God’s sake LOL.

  • Emergency Kit: Carry a basic emergency kit with you, including a first-aid kit and tools for minor repairs. Either that, or make sure you have a tow truck’s phone number.

  • Enjoy the drive or ride: Take your time, enjoy the scenery, and have a safe and enjoyable trip.

There you have it; a few tips for a short trip.

Take care!
