The Carnival Cruise Adventure

John took a Carnival cruise to the Caribbean, in the early 2000s. It was a short excursion that visited the Bahamas, The Cayman Islands (tax haven), and Jamaica. His wife and children had the time of their lives visiting interesting places at each destination.

Memorable Destinations

  • The Bahamas

  • The Cayman Islands

  • Jamaica

The weather was great, and the entertainment was exceptional. Food served onboard was plentiful, catering to all tastes and preferences. The gym facilities were first-rate, allowing John to maintain his fitness routine even while on vacation.

A Unique Auction

During the cruise, John even bid for a lithography (numbered painting) by Alexandra Nechita, a child prodigy artist who rose to international fame in the mid-1990s. This added a unique touch to his memorable journey. And guess what: he outbided the rest and ended up paying US$2,000.00 which could be worth a lot more today, as he acquired it some 20 years earlier.

Tax Incentive

As a financially successful businessman, he allocated the family cruise, as a business trip which was tax advantageous. He also had the opportunity to visit his bank in the Cayman Islands to meet his manager and discuss his financial options. Unfortunately, on the day they visited it was a bank holiday, and commercial offices were closed.

Overall, it was an unforgettable experience for John and his family, filled with joy and adventure at every turn.

Take care!

Vocabulary builder:

"Outbided" (past tense verb of outbid) means to make a higher offer or bid than someone else to buy something, especially at an auction or when competing for a contract, essentially offering more money to win the item or deal. It signifies winning a bidding war by topping another person's proposal, like being outbid for a painting or land.

Tax haven (n) = Yes, the Cayman Islands are widely considered a tax haven due to their lack of corporate and personal income tax, capital gains tax, and other direct taxes, making them highly attractive for international business and wealth management, though they generate revenue through other fees and duties. This tax-neutral environment attracts multinational corporations and individuals seeking to minimize tax liabilities, though the territory also functions as a major international financial center.

Advantageous (adj) = involving or creating favorable circumstances that increase the chances of success or effectiveness; beneficial. "The scheme is advantageous to your company"
