For the BMW B48 2.0L Turbo engine (2018+), it is strictly required to replace all four spark plugs together, but it is not a requirement to replace all four ignition coils and injectors at the same time unless they show signs of failure.

Replacement Intervals & Wear

  • Spark Plugs: Must be replaced every 60,000 miles (approx. 96,000 km) or roughly every 6 years on stock setups. If you use engine tuning software (like BM3, MHD, or JB4), this interval drops significantly to every 20,000–40,000 miles.

  • Ignition Coils: Coils do not have a set expiration, but the rule of thumb is to replace them every second spark plug change (approx. 100,000+ miles / 160,000 km) or preemptively if they start failing.

  • Fuel Injectors: Injectors are not scheduled maintenance items. They only require replacement if they leak, clog, or cause misfires. If one injector fails, many experts suggest replacing all four at once to avoid uneven fuel distribution

Which Wears Out First?

Spark plugs wear out long before coils or injectors. Spark plugs operate in extreme heat and voltage, naturally degrading over their lifespan. Worn-out spark plugs can strain and even cause premature failure of the ignition coils, which is why it is common to replace both simultaneously during a major ignition service.

Do You Need to Change All Four Parts?

It depends on which of the four parts you are referring to:

  1. Spark Plugs: Yes. You must change all four simultaneously to maintain balanced combustion across all cylinders.

  2. Ignition Coils: No. You only need to replace coils if they crack, cause misfires, or fail. If you just want peace of mind, you can replace all four at once.

  3. Injectors: No. It is a waste of money to replace perfectly functioning injectors. If one fails, you only need to replace the bad one—or replace all four if you prefer a complete overhaul.

If you're planning a service or repair, tell me:

  • Are you having symptoms like misfires or rough idling?

  • Is your car stock or tuned?

  • What mileage is your car at?

I can provide part recommendations and further troubleshooting steps.

Take care!
