Patience, Growth, and the True Essence of Winning

When I was growing up, my parents often reminded me, “Patience is a virtue.” At the time, I barely understood what they meant. Now, at 65, I can say with confidence—they were right.

Consider the way we look at progress: if a baby doesn’t start walking right after their first birthday, parents panic. They worry something is wrong. My brother, for example, had to wear nappies to bed until he was eleven—far beyond what’s considered “normal.” Yet in the end, he overcame it. Life has a way of balancing itself out if we give it the time it needs.

We live in a world obsessed with speed. Time is money, we’re told, and that makes sense when you’re analyzing efficiency. But why must every accomplishment be rushed? Why not sit back, breathe deeply, and truly appreciate the moment? As the saying goes, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” Even if you follow the biblical version and the world was made in seven days, rushing greatness rarely leads to fulfillment.

Trying to “beat the bullet” and get ahead of everyone else is desperation in disguise. Society glorifies winners: the first to the finish line, the medals on the wall, the titles that proclaim superiority. Yet, being first is not always the most important goal. Yes, recognition can motivate us, but the real victory lies in growth—the kind that comes from consistent effort, reflection, and learning.

Life is an experience—a journey to be savored whether you’re at the top of the ladder or just starting out. True fulfillment comes from engagement: from the satisfaction of building skills, overcoming challenges, and making progress that resonates with your values. That is what separates fleeting success from lasting achievement.

When we focus on personal growth while enjoying the milestones along the way, life becomes deeply rewarding. Growth isn’t just about business or career; it’s about pursuing projects and passions that bring meaning, purpose, and satisfaction.

So, embrace the journey. Take pride in your progress, relish the experiences that come with learning, and cultivate a mindset of steady, purposeful advancement. Winning isn’t always about being first—it’s about being fully involved, continually growing, and finding fulfillment in the climb itself.

In the end, the true essence of a winner is simple: patience, presence, and persistent growth. That is a victory worth celebrating every single day.

Take care!
